The theme this week was night time/day time. The letter of the week was Nn-nut-/n/, and the words of the week were not and no. We practiced printing and reading our new letter and words.
In Language we introduced our first word family: the -an family. Word families give readers a tool to recognize patterns in words instead of needing to sound out individual letters. We will introduce eight different word families throughout the kindergarten year. Can you child remember some of the words in the word family? Help him/her tell you which ones are real words (i.e. can, ran, fan) vs. make up words (i.e. lan, san, han.) Please visit the "Word Families" tab for more information and activities using word families. The class reviewed the sounds that all of our letters make and practiced matching pictures to the correct sound. Also, we wrote in our journals about what we can see in the sky.
In Math we introduced recognizing, printing and counting numbers 11-15. We like to call these numbers the "tricky teens" because they can be hard to remember and hard to count! If your child is having difficulty recognizing, printing our counting any of these numbers, please continue to practice at home. Next week we will be moving onto 16-20. The class also worked on addition by using rolling two dice and adding them together to find the sum, pictured below.
In Science and Social Studies we learned about the solar system and night time/day time. The students made their own solar system mural and used flashlights to see how the sun creates day time and the earth's shadow creates night time. Can your child remember how long it takes for the earth to make one spin? Or how long it takes to make a whole orbit around the sun? The class also made decorative corn with finger paint for our classroom, pictured below.
