April 22-26

This week we learned our last letter of the week: Zz-zebra-/z/. The word of the week was did. Our theme was Zoo.

In Language the class learned to print our new letter and word, and got to think of many words that begin with Zz. For journals, everyone brought in their own favorite zoo animal to write about. All of the finished pages will be put together to make a class zoo book. Thank you for allowing your child to bring his/her animal to school; it was lots of fun! On Friday, we got to make a fun book with some zany zoo animals!

In Math we continued to focus on numbers that make partners of 10. (i.e. 9 & 1, 8 & 2, etc.) The children also kept practicing their skills with subtraction. Many are very confident with the idea of subtracting two numbers.

In Science and Social Studies, we studied some facts about different animals that we could find at the zoo. The children also got to explore a map using the directions north, south, east, and west. When looking at a map, see if he/she can find the compass and tell you which direction is which. Also, we are fortunate enough to have 5 of our own caterpillars in our classroom. For eight days, we have been watching them grow bigger and bigger. It has been fun to predict when they will start spinning their chrysalises. How many days does your kindergartner think it will take?

Next week the kindergartners will be participating in the PALS (phonological awareness literacy screener) state spring test. This test will be very similar to the state test that your child took in the fall. To learn more about the testing, you can visit this website. We will be testing for a period of time several days next week, so please make sure your child is coming to school prepared for the tests by getting enough sleep and eating a good breakfast. This will help make sure that your child can show off all the growth he/she has made this year in kindergarten!
