February 11-15

This week the letter of the week was Qu-queen-/kw/. The words of the week were in and they. We talked about words that started with Qq and learned to print our new letter and words. The theme was Valentine's Day for a second week.

In Language we learned a new word family: the -ot family. Check the "Word Families" tab to review them with your child. The class also learned about the question mark, and practiced distinguishing an asking sentence from a telling sentence. We played a special game of Valentine's BINGO to practice our core words. For journals, the each child wrote about a special family member and explained what they love about him/her this Valentine's Day.

In Math we practiced our counting skills with conversation hearts. Can your child remember how many hearts his/her box had? We also talked about different types of money and how each coin is counted. One of the coins started with this week's letter. Can your child remember it's name?

In Science and Social Studies, the students investigated four different coins: penny, nickel, dime, quarter. We learned what each looks like and how much money it is worth. Can your child tell you which is which? We also learned about how coins are made at the US Mint. For President's Day, we have also been learning about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. It is fun to read about what they were like when they were young, even though it was around 200 years ago!
