The theme this week was Christmas. The letter of the week was Cc-cat-/k/, and the word of the week was can. We practiced printing and reading with our new letter and words.
In Language we played a game to practice identifying the initial consonant in a word. Being able to isolate a word's initial sound is a key step in reading success. The children were also given a sound and tried to see how many words they could think of for the sound. These are fun activities that you can also do at home or in the car. For journals, the children were writing about a Christmas picture. We also played a fun Christmas tree matching game to practice with our core words.
In Math we worked more with ten frames. Ten frames are great for helping children understand numbers in concrete form. The children were also able to see how the ten frames can be used to help us add numbers. It's a great visual way for the children to see the sum of two numbers being added together. In the future, we will also be adding with fingers, manipulatives, tally marks, and number lines. Click on "Kindergarten Internet Games" to find a great online game using ten frames. Additionally, the children practiced sequencing teen numbers by creating a Christmas candle. Being able to print and recognize numerals will be critical for your child as we move forward in math.
In Science and Social Studies we learned how candy canes are made. We got to make our own candy canes using Starburst candy. Have your kindergartner tell you how our body was able to change the temperature of the Starburst to make it stretch.
