The theme this week was habitats, hibernation and bears. The letter of the week was Hh-hat-/h/, and the words of the week were have, brown and black. We practiced printing and reading our new letter and words.
In Language we continued to practice the rules of a good sentence and tracking a sentence as we read. The children wrote in their journals about what is in their habitats. We practiced thinking of rhymes and used them to create a class book called Oh, A Hunting We Will Go. Can your kindergartner help you think of some rhymes? Continue to practice with rhyming at home will help your child build his/her beginning reading skills.
In Math we are beginning to introduce addition. The first step was using 10-frames to find out how many more spaces needed to get filled to make 10. 10 frames are an easier way for children to visualize numbers. The next step was introducing the + and = signs. The class looked at dots on a dice to combine two groups and find the sum. Next week we will be moving into counting, recognizing and printing 11-20.
In Science and Social Studies we learned about animal habitats, and the Kindergartners made a habitat book. On Tuesday, all MAES students participated in a mock presidential election and the Kindergartners got to vote for their favorite candidate. Barack Obama was the winning candidate from the mock election. We are looking forward to learning the results of the real election on Nov. 6.
Next week the theme will be night time & day time. The letter of the week will be Nn-nut-/n/, and the words of the week will be not and no.
