October 22-25

The theme this week was bats and Halloween. The letter of the week was Bb-bat-/b/, and the words of the week were a, by and blue.

In Language we continued to practice the rules of a good sentence by unscrambling sentences that had gotten mixed up. We also used rhythm sticks to listen for the number of syllables in words. This is a skill that is very useful as we become more independent writers.  Also, we learned that listening for rhyming words can help us when we read. See if your child can help you brainstorm some rhyming words.

In Math we reviewed printing and counting all the way from 1-10. Recognizing and printing these numerals is still a difficult skill for some children, so please continue to practice at home. The class also learned about graphs with a ghost activity.

In Science and Social Studies we learned that bats are very interesting creatures, not scary like some people think. What can your child remember about the bat facts that we learned? Also, the class talked about election day and the two Presidential candidates. There will be a mock vote on Tuesday where each child will vote for his/her favorite candidate.

Next week the theme will be bears, habitats and hibernation. The letter of the week will be Hh-hat-/h/, and the words of the week will be have, brown and black.

If you remember the note from parent teacher conferences, our state PALS (phonological awareness literacy screener) testing begins on Monday, and we will be testing for a period of time each day next week. Please make sure your child is coming to school prepared for the tests by getting to sleep early and eating a good breakfast.
