October 1-5

The theme this week was "Apples" and "Fire Safety."

In Language the letter of the week was Aa-apple-/a/. Your Kindergartner learned to print the letter, what sound it makes, and brainstormed Aa words to put in our ABC Dictionaries. Can your Kindergartner tell you some words or classmates' names that begin with Aa? Each week there will be a new letter to focus on with these activities, but it will still be important to remember all of our previous letters. The word of the week was look. Our weekly journal writing started this week and each Kindergartner got to write his/her favorite fire safety rule in our "Fire Safety" class book. We learned the story of Johnny Appleseed, and sequenced the growth of an apple seed.  We were also working hard to continue practicing printing our first names the Kindergarten way to get ready for the assessment next week. Your support from home has been extremely valuable.

In Math we continued to review printing and counting numbers 1-5. To practice our numerals and counting, we looked at the spots on a firehouse dog and counted them to match with the correct numeral.  We read a book called "Ten Apples up On Top" and each child got to make a page for our class book.  The Kindergartners continued to practice and also did an assessment for 3-part patterns.

In Science and Social Studies we investigated apples. You child did a taste test of red, green, and yellow apples and made a graph of the class' favorites. Which was his/her favorite? Can he/she remember which color the class liked the most? We also learned the different parts of an apple, and made predictions with how many apple seeds would be inside. The Kindergartners looked at the four seasons and how an apple tree changes throughout the year. See if your child can tell you the four seasons and how an apple tree would look in each one.

Next week the theme will be spiders and skeletons. The letter of the week will be Ss-snake-/s/, and the word of the week will be see. On Wednesday we will walk to the fire station for a field trip.
